Can hamper fans be the key to saving drinking culture?

A study has indicated that red wine drinkers may be capable of saving pubs, bars and restaurants, even though they are the most likely kind of drinker to indulge at home.

Results compiled by the Wilson Drinks Report have shown lovers of the beverage found in wine hampers spend more when they go out than those who prefer lager and bitter, Harpers Wine & Spirit reports.

Managing director of the research group Tim Wilson explained how businesses may want to capitalise on this information.

"The trick for pub, bar and restaurant owners is to encourage wine drinkers to go out more often and to make sure they maintain their average spend per trip," he said.

Although 86 per cent of red enthusiasts prefer to have a tipple at home, those of them who venture elsewhere fork out a nightly average of £17.68.

Earlier this month, Greene King - a familiar brand to hamper fans - bought the Cloverleaf Restaurants chain for £55.8 million.
