Book hampers help promote reading
Published on 13/03/2012

A US school employed a unique method of raising funds for the classroom by putting together one-of-a-kind gift baskets.

The Elizabethton Star reports how Harold McCormick Elementary hosted a Family Reading Night in order to promote the pastime and collect donations.

A silent auction was held, which saw hampers containing several books of one genre offered for sale to parents and visitors.

Individuals could bid on the baskets and all the proceeds will be used to purchase classroom supplies.

A book fair was also held in the school library so participants could buy their favourite novel.

Adults were given a chance to learn more about what the youngsters were reading, with classics, biographies, fantasy, informational, poetry, mystery and science fiction among the offerings.

The event followed the recent 2012 World Book Day, which was held on March 1st and aims to encourage children to enjoy reading by giving them a free token to spend.
