Birthday hampers bought on mobiles set to grow?
Published on 04/11/2011

More birthday hampers could be purchased via mobile phones in the next five years, with a new report predicting the number of transactions performed on such devices is set to expand.

According to research from PayPal, the market will grow by 42 per cent each year to 2016, when it will be worth more than £2.5 billion.

At present, mobile purchases account for 1.5 per cent of online retail sales, with consumers spending an average of £100 a year.

Health and grocery products - which could include birthday hampers - will represent 42.1 per cent of all transactions carried out on handsets by 2016.

Cameron McLean, general manager of merchant services at PayPal UK, said that many retailers will get onboard with the changing trend.

"The convenience of a connected device that can be used almost anywhere will lure increasing numbers of UK consumers to mobile buying," he added.

A recent study by UTalkMarketing and Toluna revealed that nearly one-third of those aged between 18 and 34 will buy presents for loved ones this Christmas using their mobile phones.
