Birthday hamper on Mandela's wishlist?
Published on 08/07/2010

Nelson Mandela may be looking for a birthday hamper as well as some help to make the world a better place.

The former South African president and peace activist is turning 92 on July 18th and has asked people to pick from a list of 13 activities they can spend 67 minutes on to change someone's life.

Included in the list is contacting local HIV organisations to offer help, volunteering at a local hospice, taking some time to chat to a terminally ill person and donating a bag of toys to a children's ward.

The list has been compiled by the United Nations, which set up Mandela Day, an annual event that coincides with the Nobel Peace Prize Laureate's birthday and aims to improve the world in small ways.

The New York Times recently reported that former Beatle Ringo Starr could be receiving a birthday hamper as he celebrates his 70th year with a string of special events.
