A wine gift hamper 'could boost memory'
Published on 12/07/2010

Consumers who purchase a wine gift hamper may find the product has a pleasantly surprising side-effect.

Researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology's Picower Institute for Learning and Memory have discovered resveratrol, which is found in the beverage, can help boost memory and brainpower.

The compound activates the enzyme SIRT1, which helps people remember information, the experts claimed.

Their findings have been published in the July 11th issue of the journal Nature.

Li-Huei Tsai, director of the facility and lead author of the study, commented: "We have now found that SIRT1 activity also promotes plasticity and memory."

It is hoped the research could result in new drugs to combat disorders such as Alzheimer's disease, as well as numerous other debilitating neurological ailments.

Horticulture Week recently suggested English vineyards are now producing wines that could soon compete with the more famous brands of the drink that are produced in countries like France and Italy.
