2010 'a good year' for wine hamper fans
Published on 23/08/2010

This year has been a good spell for wine hamper fans, it has been suggested.

Writing for the Independent, James Burton noted elongated periods of sunshine in the south has meant a bumper harvest that has seen growth in reds and unblended wines.

Wine expert Alun Griffiths explained: "The fact we're getting more single varietal wines from classic grapes like chardonnay does indicate an increase in quality."

Mr Burton said the improving climate has been accompanied by an increase in expertise regarding the beverage in Britain.

He observed two wines from England were handed gold awards at the International Wien Challenge, before adding there are now more hectares of red wine vines in the country than there ever has been before.

Researchers in Norway recently found drinking wine in moderation can help a person reduce their likelihood of experiencing a decline in their cognitive skills after evaluating the drinking habits of 5,000 men and women over a period of seven years.
