People who received a Xmas hamper over the festive period should ensure they know how many units of alcohol they are supposed to consume, it has been suggested. In an interview with Harpers Wine and Spirit Chris Sorek, chief executive of Drinkaware, said it would be easy for individuals to stick to guidelines if they understood them more. "It's important we challenge the norm of people unwittingly drinking to excess, whether that's at home after a long day at work or out at a bar or restaurant," he added. His comments follow the release of a survey by the organisation, which revealed 85 per cent of respondents have heard of alcohol units, but just 42 per cent understand what a unit is. In total, 46 per cent of men identified which beverages equate to one unit, compared with 30 per cent of their female counterparts. Elsewhere, a recent article in the Guardian recommended hamper enthusiasts decant full-bodied reds, as this will mellow the tannins.
